Neighbors Empowering Neighbors
Fighting for Food Access
Inspiring Through Art
Our Mission
Buddy System is fighting food insecurity by creating unique and innovative ways to engage our community, empowering neighbors to support neighbors, beginning with access to free, healthy food.
Our Programming
Community Fridges
Buddy System operates a network of public refrigerators across Miami-Dade County. These fridges are changing the landscape of food insecurity in Miami, bringing community support to food deserts with a simple message: take what you need, leave what you can. This initiative has supported thousands of people experiencing food insecurity with free, healthy food. Each fridge is also a truly unique and special piece of community art.
Homebound Food Access
Buddy System places people who are homebound, elderly or disabled with a volunteer in their neighborhood who attends our food pantry distributions on their behalf. Often these volunteer pairings flourish into lasting neighborly friendships. In addition to increased food security, this program also promotes community and social wellness. We are very proud to have served over 400 people in Miami-Dade through this program.
Trans Food Assistance
Buddy System hosts a monthly food distribution to support transgender and gender nonconforming people in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties who are struggling with food insecurity. By having queer people deliver food directly to other queer people, we aim to remove barriers to food access such as homophobia, transphobia, and structural poverty. Our goal is to strengthen LGBTQIA+ community in South Florida and improve the quality of life for everyone
